At Barannes we try to do everything as healthily as possible. We source high quality ingredients for the juices and smoothies you love and stock products that support a healthy way of living. Since taking over the business earlier in 2017 we have been looking at ways of looking after the health of the environment we live in too.
We believe the biggest impact we can have in this area is changing from our current plastic disposable cups, lids and straws for our juice products. You love our juices so much we go through thousands of cups and straws every week.
We are supporting the local 'Straws Suck' campaign launched by 'The Good Jersey Life' and have been trialling the use of paper straws. However, whilst they are fine for juices, paper straws are simply not robust enough for our thicker smoothies. Unless you drink your smoothie very quickly the straw starts to soften, making it harder to suck.
The good news is we have now found alternatives with straws made from corn starch that are 100% compostable. The even better news is that this material is made from plants not plastic and is not just for straws.
Made from plants not plastic
From 17th July 2017*, our juices and smoothies will be sold in cups with lids and straws made from corn starch. These smoothie cups & lids are made from annually renewable plant crops. They are 100% compostable and generate fewer greenhouse gases than plastic cups during production. They are light, strong and clear, but look and feel exactly the same as the oil based plastic cups they replace.
We are sourcing our cups direct from the manufacturers in the UK, who are independently certified 100% compostable by leading European and US authorities including OK Compost, certified by Vincotte, and The Biodegradable Product Institute (BPI).
The natural plant crops used to make our packaging include sugarcane, corn and sustainable birchwood. After harvesting the edible crops, the left over organic matter is processed to extract the usable materials. The naturally occurring plant starch derived from crops like corn is processed into a bio-polymer material commonly known as PLA (Polylactic Acid). It is used to make our range of cold drinks cups, lids & straws.
This renewable material has a carbon footprint that is 78% lower than oil-based plastic and can be composted together with food waste after use. They are only suitable for cold drinks up to 40 degrees C, because the PLA material starts to break down at higher temperatures.
*We will be going through a transition period during July as we use up our existing stock of plastic cups and lids. However, we are immediately changing to corn starch straws.
