The Grumpy Way
We've been serving Grumpy Mule Coffee at both our shops since May 2017, when we first had the coffee machines installed. The feedback from everyone who tries our coffee has been great, but we need your help to get the word out, that Grumpy Mule organic fair trade coffee, not only tastes great, but is good for the planet too! Coffee is also healthy, in moderation of course, so that ticks all the boxes for us.
This is what the makers of Grumpy Mule have to say about their trading philosophy:
We will never short-change our growers. Full stop.
Whether it’s through Fairtrade, Direct Trade, or working with organic farmers and growers, we believe in ethical business that benefits all.
The quality of our coffees – and the special flavours that makes our mule go giddy with excitement – depend on the quality of our growers, so we work alongside them, building relationships, and investing in local communities from the mountains of Panama to the highlands of Sumatra.
Throughout the foodservice supply chain, we honour these relationships, so that you can buy Grumpy Mule with a clear conscience.
It’s simply the right way to work. Plus, anything less than this makes our mule VERY angry. And you wouldn’t like him when he’s angry.
Our range of coffee experiences is just what you'd expect from any decent coffee shop. You can choose from:
- Flat white
We also do an iced coffee made from a shot of espresso blended with ice and cold milk.
Your choice of milk
As you'd expect from a health store we can offer you a range of different milks, including Jersey Milk, Organic Jersey Milk, Almond Milk, Coconut Milk or Rice Milk. The choice is yours!
It's all in the beans
We buy the beans directly from Grumpy Mule in the UK. They are passionate about the roasting process which allows them to really get the best from their beans.
Their philosophy is to treat each variety of bean differently, working to vary the intensity of the roast to find the sweet spot of optimum flavour and aroma. It might be that a coffee requires a longer roasting to balance the acidity and coax out the complexity, or it might be that the roast is much shorter so as not to mask the delicate floral and fruity notes. Either way, they treat the process like the art it is.
Here's what they have to say about the roasting process:
At our specialist roastery in Meltham, Yorkshire, we know exactly how we like to roast our beans, controlling the whole process with clever software (and an experienced roaster!) to account for day-day variations so that we tease out those distinct, nuanced flavours.
We use two trusty Probat drum roasters, along with our Loring Smart roaster giving us great flexibility across batch size and roast profile, ultimately getting the best from each coffee.
The Loring Smart roaster, is actually a particularly clever piece of kit that utilises a single burner for both the convective roasting of the coffee and also for the afterburning. A ‘hybrid’ drum and air roaster with advanced software, it uses much less gas than traditional format drum roasters and is noted for a particularly clean taste.
We don't just sell coffee by the cup either. If you'd like to try Grumpy Mule at home then we stock three of their ground coffees ready to go into your cafetiere or filter machine. We stock the following Grumpy Mule flavours:
ORGANIC PERU CAFÈ FEMENINO
Peru Café Femenino is a coffee produced by the women of the Union Cecanor Co-operative in Peru’s Lambayeque region. Part of the Café Femenino Coffee Project, this coffee is grown, processed and traded exclusively by women in a way that allows the coffee’s natural qualities to shine.
Dark chocolate taste notes give way to a mild citrus and cocoa balance, creating a richness of flavour that’s going to taste pretty ace when you’re tucked under a duvet watching daytime telly!
ORGANIC SUMATRA GAYO HIGHLANDS
A real crowd-pleaser – this is one that will really set off a good meal. Or erase the memory of a bad one. Actually, it’s awesome whatever you’ve eaten.
Produced by partner growers from Takengon and Lake Lut Tawar in the Aceh province and bought at the price those farmers deserve, the clean, cocoa and dark chocolate flavours mean you can forget whatever foil-wrapped treat you had in mind.
ORGANIC SEASONAL DECAF - SWISS WATER PROCESSED
If you are one of those special sorts who can kick without caffeine; this one’s for you. And our mule’s going to make sure you don’t get shorted on flavour.
The crop will change from season to season, but you can be sure it’ll get the full Swiss water treatment so as to preserve the unique flavour and aroma of each and every bean. As if our mule would let it happen any other way.
Coffee not your thing?
Don't worry we also serve a range of speciality teas from Pukka. If the one you want isn't on display just ask and provided we have a box in stock we can make you your favourite cup. We did forget that some our customers just want a regular cup of normal black tea with milk, so we now sell this too!
As for tea by the packet, you are spoiled for choice at Barannes with teas from Pukka, Yogi, Heath & Heather, Qi and others. With over 50 different teas to choose from we know there will be something you like! Why not try something different next time you come in?
All our hot drinks can be purchased in regular (8oz) or large (12oz) cups. Maybe not quite as big as the 'buckets of coffee' available from some local shops, but we believe in quality not quantity!
