Activated charcoal has long been used for the treatment of poisoning and drug overdoses. It is used in accident and emergency centres around the world. In addition, it is used to reduce bloating and gas, lower cholesterol, treat bile flow problems and even help to prevent hangovers. It can be used for short term disorders (making charcoal tablets an essential travelling companion when on holiday) or for long term health problems such as colitis and IBS.
Activated charcoal is a potent natural treatment and works by trapping toxins and chemicals in the body, allowing them to be flushed out so the body doesn’t reabsorb them. It’s made from a variety of sources, but for natural healing, it’s important to select activated charcoal made from coconut shells or other natural sources.

Bragg’s Activated Charcoal Tablets
In our Colomberie health shop we sell the popular Bragg’s Charcoal Tablets. According to Bragg’s website the tablets “provide 100% natural relief for indigestion, wind and heartburn. Their ability to absorb gases means they are also useful in alleviating the symptoms of dyspepsia and other digestive problems, easing chronic and recurrent abdominal discomfort which can often be accompanied by belching and nausea.”
What makes Bragg’s charcoal tablets different?
Bragg’s use a high refined grade of activated charcoal in our products, this is totally different to natural charcoal which may be harmful. The charcoal used for medical applications is highly refined and purified to remove the harmful substances that are found in other natural grades of charcoal, which are not activated or highly refined.
Activated charcoal is produced by heating charcoal to high temperatures (800 - 1000 degrees centigrade), a process that alters the structure of the charcoal producing a honeycomb structure, which has a huge surface area - 1g of activated charcoal may have an area of over 1000 square metres. JL Bragg only uses activated charcoal produced from coconuts. The structure of activated charcoal produced from coconuts is unique and works in harmony with our bodies, whereas other forms of charcoal do not have the same health benefits.
Activated charcoal does not absorb any nutrients, minerals or vitamins as these substances are either too large or do not bond with activated charcoal.
Kiki Health Activated Charcoal Powder
KIKI ‘s Activated Charcoal is produced from sustainable coconuts which has been highly purified with steam to remove any contaminants for use as a pharmaceutical active ingredient.
It is a finely reduced powder (5-10 microns), which presents a huge surface area for the absorption of unwanted substances. When taken orally or used on teeth or skin it works as a sponge to soak up contaminants.
Activated charcoal contributes to reducing excessive flatulence after eating.
The beneficial effect is obtained with 1 g which should be taken at least 30 minutes before and 1 g shortly after the meal.
This new juice has been introduced to combine the benefits of activated charcoal with Caribbean flavours of coconut and pineapple (but not the rum!).
It’s made with Kale, Pineapple, Apple, Hemp Seed’s, Charcoal powder and topped up with Coconut Milk. It’s available at both of our Juice Bar’s, but if not on the specials board it may be subject to availability of ingredients.
A great way to try out the benefits of Activated Charcoal in a easy to consume way!
If you are taking prescribed medication we recommend that you discuss the use of activated charcoal with your medical adviser. Activated charcoal can reduce the effectiveness of prescribed medications.
